Why is Lemmy not allowing comments if you’re using a VPN all of a sudden? This seems anti-privacy.
Instances often temporarily block participation from certain VPN traffic due to coordinated attacks that occur from those IPs. Most instances lift the ban when the attacks taper off.
I’m commenting from a VPN.
You might be confusing one particular instance for the entirety of Lemmy
Remember that lemmy is not one monolithic structure. User experience will vary from instance to instance. If your instance or an instance you’re visiting is blocking you when on vpn, it’s that instance’s admins who decided to do that. It would be better to ask in their support or meta community.
If it’s your own home instance and you believe what they’re doing is anti-privacy, then they do not align with your values and you should consider moving to another instance that does.
Their is no such thing as “visiting another instance” everything u do (except images depending on ur home instance config) goes through ur home instance.
I guess I just expected a techie centric platform like this to be more VPN friendly.
Like I said, it’s only as vpn friendly as the instance admin wants it to be. It’s not the platform that’s vpn averse, it’s the person/people running it. The admin may or may not have a legit reason for blocking VPNs. Who knows, maybe the instance is being attacked so they temporarily blocked VPNs.
If it’s your home instance that’s doing it, then you should consider moving to another instance that aligns more to your values.
Register on a different lemmy instance that does not do that.
I’m using a VPN, comments work just fine for me, on AirVPN.
Same here, using Proton and Mullvad.
Likely the mod of your instance decided to brute force a problem they were facing with spam or ban evasion by banning VPNs. Maybe get in touch with them to let them know it’s inconveniencing you - or switch to another instance.
