Yeah I’m not “the boss” of my parents. My dad was very tech savvy, but he doesn’t have the same memory and cognition as he used to so when I set it up nice he likes it, but any friction sets him off to “solve” the problem… By doing some random totally different thing that doesn’t so much solve the problem as “gets it working, sort of” with a browser he recognizes. Then because there are ads he loses interest and just puts on the 24/7 news cycle. :(

So my parents use chrome even though I constantly install Firefox and hide chrome. Problem there is they end up with Edge so I stopped doing that. (Didn’t windows get in trouble for this kind of market control in the 90’s?)

So I had Ublock origin on chrome for them but it’s “not supported” anymore and my usual method of ignoring what it says and turning it back on are now failing.

Any help?

That sounds great. I’m bad at reading (not bad at it. Just don’t do it lol) but I’ll put that in my audiobooks for long trips pile. It sounds very much up my alley.

I have jokingly threatened to sneak a pair onto my partner’s truck just to see how long it takes him to figure it out. But I’m not a monster. Even as a joke. I wouldn’t put him through that.

Don’t know why you’d get a downvote for personal preference. I would argue that a lot of the content I watch doesn’t have a suitable book form, so even if I did prefer that method of osmosis, I’d be out of luck.

Got a recommendation for a book (or audiobook) for a nerd like me? I’d describe myself but the internet already knows too much so… Conservation and technology (new or ancient)

Rent. Small mom and pop shops that can’t afford their own space get all that money syphoned away to the landlords. All saving that come from big corporate supply chains and mass production also leave M+P shops screwed.

Large companies can weather hard times much easier as well, so M+P shops will fall away during hard times while McDonald’s will just fire some min wage workers, stop caring about quality and hike prices a bit.

The system is not set up for M+P survival.

Forgive me if you thought I was pointing at you specifically. I’m pointing at idiots who make all these stupid and childish arguments, in this thread, but in every Lemmy post about speed cameras.

The real problem is people incapable of adhering to societal rules. The real problem is children in adult clothes getting mad when they actually get in trouble for breaking rules. “Oh why dont they just redesign the whole town to make that impossible?!?! What if someone hacks the speed camera and gives innocent people a ticket!!!Why must I read and obey the speed limit??? Oh the injustice!”

Speed cameras are inexpensive, they are not prejudiced, and they work. They cause no trouble to anyone obeying the limit and send a ticket to those who do. To everyone who also argues about fines being legal for the rich, yeah, that’s bullshit. Solve THAT problem. I’m all for it.

Except then everyone has to suffer for the stupidity of few, and emergency vehicles can’t got faster in an emergency…

I’ve never seen stupider argument than I have with these speed camera debates. Read the speed limit sign, look at your speed, follow that speed. I’d prefer your careless ass get a ticket in the mail from a camera than pay a dumb cop to sit there all day letting his buddies and “important” people go while giving everyone else a hard time.

Mostly true. Depends on the structure of the company I’d imagine. Pretending shit works like it’s written in the rule book and not exactly what you just said (won’t get involved cause he is boss) HR would absolutely bring this to the board of directors as it jeopardizes the company’s bottom line. And we all know Money is the real boss.

It’s not the cheating. It’s the “porking your HR lady” part that’s a problem for companies who dont want to get sued.

I haven’t read to many articles on the matter but for all we know hr lady does not like him at all but wanted to keep/get that job and now she is stuck in an abusive relationship. Can’t share with her partner cause yeah… And can’t get HR to step in cause… Yeah.

No evidence that is the case but that’s why we should fire CEOs who date their underlings. You are right we should absolutely not be firing people for not abiding a religious/social contract that has nothing to do with their job.

I’ve seen this response a ton and I think that’s exactly correct, but I can’t imagine the anxiety in the hours, day and weeks after. Just waiting and wondering if anyone recognised you, if anyone had a recording/proof. Then after a few months under the radar I might not be a complete train wreck.

But then what if Coldplay puts out a Netflix special or something, then I’d have to wait and wait until it came out and then watch it and see if that moment makes it into the recording… And if it does? Now I’m just waiting for some random friend of a friend to watch it and go “hang on…”

Probably why I’d never cheat on my partner, especially at a huge public gathering, when the person I’m cheating with is an employee and I’m the fucking CEO and could lose my job over it.

If “less affluent film markets” use AI, where are the artists going to get their first shot? How will they learn and hone their craft if not in the industry as lower paid talent on lower budget stuff? Just work for free for years and then Disney will start raining money on you eventually? I don’t know what to do about AI. It’s not even AI that is a problem. It’s capitalism. It’s corporations slashing every tiny expense to maximize profits for the shareholders. If they could just pretend that us film crews were actually valuable, treated us like shareholders, we could have a bigger piece of the pie and they could have better media, but then they’d have slightly less money so…

Royers is a Canadian company and ONE in their lineup of work boots are made in Canada, though you’ll have to figure out which. People at the safety shoe store are happy to tell you they are all made in Canada even after you show them the tag on the tongue that says Vietnam.

Why isn’t the farm owner under arrest? They claim they don’t hire illegal immigrants. So is Ice arresting and reporting legal temporary workers, legal American citizens, or is this employer just flouting the law?

if this whole thing were actually about stopping foreign illegal workers, it would be quite easy to just arrest the bosses of any company found to be using them. 1 year in jail and a $2000 for ever worker found to be without proper paperwork. Give the workers half the fine money and a bus ticket back with a warning and put them on a list. They probably deserve more for the abuse they had to tolerate so their American boss could make their money.

Again, if the intention is as we are being told. It’s harsh but fair for everyone involved.
