  • You are spot on here. AI is great for sensitivity (noticing potential issues), but terrible for specivity (giving many false positives).

The issue is how AI is used, not the AI itself. They don’t have a human in the checking process. They should use AI scanner to check the car. If it’s fine, then you have saved the employee from manually checking, which is a time-consuming process and prone to error.

If the AI spots something, then get an employee to look at the issues highlighted. If it’s just a water drop or other false positive, then it should be a one click ‘ignore’, and the customer goes on their way without charge. If it is genuine, then show the evidence to the customer and discuss charges in person. Company still saves time over a manual check and has much improved accuracy and evidence collection.

They are being greedy by trying to eliminate the employee altogether. This probably doesn’t actually save any money, if anything it costs more in dealing with complaints, not to mention the loss of sales due to building a poor image.

  • Forget about the AI. There is so much wrong with this.

    1. If it gets it wrong, either false positive or false negative, then there are serious consequences. This means there is no way it can “play it safe” with an answer.
    2. I don’t trust that it’s not capturing and storing data. The risk of a “highly personal” data being leaked is completely unwarranted.
    3. It works from a photo, therefore it’s unlikely to pick up much more than you can see by eye. You’d be better off just learning what to look for.
    4. It won’t detect STIs with no visual symptoms, so provides an entirely false sense of confidence, potentially increasing the risks of those STIs to the general population.
    5. Let’s say it works perfectly, and the AI algorithm runs completely locally with no data being transferred to the cloud or being captured/stored. Do you want to have someone you don’t trust about being honest about STIs taking a photo of your genitals?

That’s what I can come up with in 10 seconds. Feel free to add to the list, I’m sure it’s not complete…

  • Bobby’s mum and dad decided that the only way to pull off a Sunday afternoon quickie with their 10-year-old son in the apartment was to send him out on the balcony and order him to report on all the neighbourhood activities.

The boy began his commentary as his parents put their plan into action.

“There’s a car being towed from the parking lot,” he said. “An ambulance just drove by.” A few moments passed.

“Looks like the Anderson’s have company,” he called out. “Matt`s riding a new bike, and the Coopers are having sex.”

Mom and dad shot up in bed. “How do you know that?” the startled father asked.

“Their kid is standing out on the balcony too,” his son replied.

  • I imagine this is how Apple would justify it - if there are internal screws or shields missing then it’s a sign that it has been repaired previously by a 3rd party. It might work fine, but it’s not to the original Apple specification.

The Apple store don’t want to take responsibility for those repairs so refuse to do further work in case it leaves them with liability.

  • Nobody’s mentioned it, but the main thing for me is that the screen aspect ratio isn’t any good.

I’ve always preferred bigger screens and bigger phones and willing to pay a bit extra for a foldable screen now they’ve been on the market for a while. I doubt they’ll last as long as a normal phone screen, but they generally review well and I get they impression they are more durable than most people expect.

But… the main benefit of a big screen (for me) is for watching videos. If it’s not 16:9 (or close to it) then what’s the point? I don’t need to multitask on my phone, I’ll switch to a laptop for that - I’ve had phones that do split screen for years and it was a cool gimmick for a while, but I’ve never really made good use of it.

If anyone can tell me of a phone with a big screen and 16:9 aspect ratio then I’d be willing to reconsider…
