  • As someone who has an undergrad in history … You’re depressingly right. Studying history is just watching people keep making the same mistakes over and over again and every so often there are improvements made to the human condition. A eureka moment here and there.

Mostly, you get to learn humans are mostly terrible. All of us, really, have some serious flaws and arguably that is what makes humans human but it’s insane to watch in slow motion my country succumbing to fascism. I wonder if I’ll get rounded up; I sure hope not.

It does blow to like call a thing years in advance and watch it happen and then have to just deal with it even though we could have stopped this.

Whatever, we all will get what we deserve for electing Trump. Madness.

  • Try ordering ahead with curbside pickup if you haven’t yet and it’s an option for you.

If not … Idk … You’ll be alright. I actually prefer self checkout and to bag my own stuff so do keep in mind people have the literal opposite feelings on this topic too.

Not to say anyone’s right or wrong, but I do agree with the post you replied to, I bet so many people were mad they couldn’t just make a list and hand it to the clerk. I wonder how many tried at first to give the cashiers or other employees a list to get for them and then were surprised when they said they had to go get it themselves.

Now we’ve gone full circle with the curbside pick up stuff! I really like it, but sometimes they do bag stuff nonsensically but no big deal.

  • That’s just not how the economy works.

The people that immigrate work. They have labor value. They’re consumers too, they’re literally just people like you and me - and zooming out to macro economics that’s all we are. The human widgets in the machine.

Trying to blame immigrants for the ills of society is a fool’s errand.

Maybe instead of pumping up shareholder value in stocks, most of which are not owned or shared by the actual labor, there could be an increase of wages and benefits through taxation. Hell stocks could be given to the people who are making that revenue for the company and not to just like the pockets of the investor class who are literally making money by simply having it.

I don’t think people prefer to be exploited for their labor but when the USD goes farther than your local currency and you’re already in bad enough straights it is worth the hardship for those folks.

Also all of this is ignoring one very obvious fact. IT IS ILLEGAL TO HIRE UNDOCUMENTED MIGRANT WORKERS. Maybe … just maybe if the companies and farm owners followed the law they claim to care so much about the demand and the benefit of “illegal” immigration would cease to exist.

Honestly, I can see how someone would think insects and animals are different things given that we never call them animals like 99% of the time.

Plus they’re so different than say, a cat or bird or fish, it almost feels like they shouldn’t be called animals.

Of course, insects are animals, but I’ve heard people say way dumber things than that, things like, “Trump is not a pedo.”

  • Honestly, I think what he got lambasted for was almost innocent compared to all the other #metoo stuff.

I’m pretty sure what he did was, at the time, under the guise of a consensual sex act that the other party agreed to. Now of course there is a power imbalance and he admitted as much (His statement is here) but I found it pretty mild compared to all the wild shit happening and that happened.

I’ll admit it’s gross and he did abuse his power over those women but he owned up to it and was honest. Huge difference between jerking off with someone watching/participating and actually raping someone though and that distinction is important.
