That would be quite optimistic, but this is something I’ve noticed at multiple restaurants myself. I saw the tip “suggestions” were not accurate so I checked to see what numbers they might have been using and tried the after tax amount etc, but nope the numbers are just inflated artificially. It’s happened with or without alcohol on the tab, with and without sale items, and I don’t ever really get anything “comped” unless it’s a sauce on the side or something. I wouldn’t say it’s a scam, but I did roll my eyes the first time I noticed it.

Nefara@lemmy.worldtoPolitical Memes@lemmy.world•YSK You can run for local government positions!!7·5 days agoAt least where I am, there are some important and influential positions that are on a volunteer basis, and literally all you do is email someone in the town, say “I’m interested in this board/committee”, and they’re like “cool we meet every other Wednesday, see you then”.
I definitely encourage anyone who is pissed off at feeling powerless to look at your town or city’s website, see what boards and committees might interest you, and start showing up.
“Beware he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart, he dreams himself your master.”
From Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, which is full of banger quotes
Nefara@lemmy.worldto ADHD memes@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Suddenly no problems dialing that number!English19·5 days agoThere’s a book called The Art of Procrastination, and its main premise is basically this. It’s amazing the amount of things you can get done by avoiding doing something else.
There’s so many great American chocolates though, it’s the cheap stuff that gives it such a bad reputation. Taza, Theo, Lake Champlain, Chocolove and lots of other little chocolatiers just doing their things but they just don’t have the same kind of market presence.
Chocolate. I absolutely adore chocolate, but only good chocolate. I’ve sought out and nibbled on hundreds of different bars and blends. Anything under 70% dark just doesn’t do it for me. I’ve melted down chocolate bars and mixed in baking chocolate and reset it so it would be darker.
Whitman’s? Russel Stover? Hershey? Reeses? Miss me with that please.
If you get the chance to try a single origin Ecuadorian dark chocolate it’s amazing, complex, fruity and floral. All of the pretentious stuff people describe about wine is genuinely there in chocolate.
Agree 100%, I make my own home made ice cream and it’s like a completely different dessert than storebought, but Talenti Gelato is a quite serviceable alternative I wouldn’t ever say no to. Generally ice cream is like bread: grocery stores will have a poor shadow of it, a good shop that makes it in house is the best if you get it fresh, and making it yourself is a way to get the good stuff cheap.
Same, if I’m going to have the calories I’m going to make it worth it. That and the good stuff always leaves me feeling more satisfied with a smaller amount
If you have 3d design experience, along with doing 3d print files you could also sell assets on sites like CG trader or Turbosquid. You could make smartmaterials/gltfs or other asset bundles and list them and maybe start getting a passive income. Also consider offering a commercial license option for your 3d prints, I understand that’s usually where artists end up making more 3d print sales because people will justify the cost by thinking they will sell the prints, and often they don’t.

Nefara@lemmy.worldto Ask Science@lemmy.world•What's the best daily caffeine intake in terms of BENEFIT / HEALTH RATIO?English1·9 days agoFor me, a 32oz pot of black tea brewed for 5-6 minutes consumed at least 12 hours before I go to bed does the trick. It gets me going and takes away the fog, and when I’m following the timing rule it doesn’t mess with my sleep at all.
However, people have all sorts of tolerance and sensitivity levels to caffeine, as well as individual reactions, body chemistry etc, it’s probably something you will have to experiment with to find the right balance for you.
Nefara@lemmy.worldto Ask Science@lemmy.world•What's the best daily caffeine intake in terms of BENEFIT / HEALTH RATIO?English3·9 days agoCaffeine has a calming or even sedative effect on a decent number of people who have ADHD, so that may be a part of it. Personally I have to cut off all caffeine intake about 12 hours before bed or I have trouble sleeping, but my grandmother used to have a cup of coffee before bed and drop off within 20 minutes.
Nefara@lemmy.worldto Games@lemmy.world•What game sequel ruined a beloved franchise or character for you?English4·9 days agoI don’t think that’s a fair assessment of Guild Wars 2. It was not a true sequel to Guild Wars 1 but it’s a decent game in its own right. I can see that if you’re playing a great city builder game and they announced a sequel, you would be thrown if that sequel was a 4x instead. But in this analogy, it’s a damn good 4x and maybe even the best amongst its contemporaries. Plus the original game is still there in all of its charm and originality, they’ve kept the servers running this long and seem to plan on keeping on doing so until no one is playing.
Haha weirdo checking in, tastes like soap but it’s like refreshing? Kinda like you can say something minty tastes like toothpaste but it’s not really a bad thing

Would that mode still work?
Nefara@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Whats a good Linux distro to dip my toe in with in a laptop running Windows 11? Is there a decent longer form guide to doing it successfully?1·13 days agoThanks for the info :) That does sound nice, but often I find myself using my computer with a drawing tablet in a weird position, which means getting to my keyboard can be a hassle. I can program some hot keys into my tablet but it’s limited. If it’s just one button to press to bring up menus that’s fine, but if it’s option+a key per function I need, I wouldn’t have enough buttons basically. I guess I’m looking for a user experience that would let me do all of my everyday functions using only a cursor or a mouse, and maybe 5-8 hotkey combinations/macros.
Nefara@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Whats a good Linux distro to dip my toe in with in a laptop running Windows 11? Is there a decent longer form guide to doing it successfully?1·13 days agoI’ve been working on “moving in” to Linux Mint, and I’ve been annoyed and frustrated by things like how hard it is to pin a program to taskbar, or find my recently used folders, or how it seems most installations disappear into a mysterious void and don’t let me put them in directories of my choosing.
How is PopOS in the context of being able to do most things through a GUI or at least menus that don’t involve terminal usage, or hotkeys I have to constantly look up? Is the general desktop environment polished and thoughtfully designed? I think I’d be up for a drastically new interface after a lifetime of Windows if it at least was intuitive, navigable through menus and made sense.
I was an incredibly angsty teenager, mad at the world and hostile to just about everyone by default. Apathetic, grumpy, and uninterested in physical activity or the things I liked as a preteen.
After having a baby and getting very little sleep for 6 months I recognized some of my old patterns. Turns out, it wasn’t just part of being a teen, I was chronically sleep deprived. I was up at 6am most days back then, when I would sleep until 1pm on weekends. I think a lot of teens are unfairly characterized as angry and defiant when they’re operating on half or a quarter of the sleep they need.
My contribution would be candied hibiscus flowers in syrup. They can be used as a garnish on a dessert like a tart or a nice sorbet, but they’re perfectly fine to eat on their own. The flower has a subtle warm berry-like flavor. You don’t eat the syrup directly but you can mix it in drinks or serve it with desserts.
I don’t know how much of a chocolate lover the person in question is, but if they like it a fun thing to try is a sampler of single origin chocolates. It can be fun to taste the difference between chocolates from different regions and see how one is fruity, another is smokey, another is earthy etc.
