Honestly I’ve been recommending setting up a personal git store and cloning any project you like, I imagine the next phase of this is Microsoft making a claim that if Copilot ‘assisted’ all these projects, Microsoft is a part owner of all these projects - in a gambit to swallow and own open source.
git is a very complex undo/redo tool designed to simultaneously track the changes made to multiple documents by multiple users while being efficient with managing disk space and other resources. (It also has other clever tricks it can do). It was created by Linus Torvalds, current development is led by Junio Hamano.
Chris Wanstrath, P. J. Hyett, Tom Preston-Werner and Scott Chacon made GitHub.com, which was eventually sold to Microsoft. GitHub does two things well: -You can easily clone any project hosted with them to your own git repository using the command ‘git clone https://github.com/[Username]/[ProjectName]’ -The rest of the public website is basically a looking glass for everything git does under the hood natively (but with a nice webUI instead of a cold command prompt).
Personally I lost faith in GitHub when it started offering Copilot assistant. We’re only a two heartbeats away from Microsoft saying that using Copilot for any of your projects code constitutes Microsoft contributed to that project as a precursor to Microsoft saying it basically ‘owns’ all this open-source stuff. Embrace, extend, extinguish (I recommend everyone run docker and GitTea to create a personal clone store (give your favorite projects insurance) and that all developers move away from GitHub)
The first vehicle I owned had no name. My friends kept asking what was named and I kept explaining “it’s a car. It gets me from point 🅰️ to point 🅱️.” I selected the car for it’s high fuel efficiency (record-breaking at the time) and general low total cost of ownership (TCO).
Not wanting to repeat the same conversation again, my second vehicle was named “Prius” and had they/them pronouns. Prius was a simple minded car, and liked car related things. Unfortunately, Prius met an untimely early end it got totaled by another driver (roommate was driving it, but the accident was 100% other driver’s fault).
For my third vehicle - another Prius, I immediately noticed her subtle feminity and her adventurous spirit. I’m gay, so it’s an immediate gal pal vibes .I named her, “Yetta” - and I knew we were destined to do crazy things together (and indeed we have!) She deserved a middle name fitting my plans for us. Taking a sort of mad hatter vibe, she got the middle name “Nutter”.
And that is the story I now tell my friends about how I got Yetta Nutter Prius.
Just a quick reminder, if you give yourself some time and a small budget (or upcycle older tech), there are more good (sometimes great) alternatives to everything listed here that you can build yourself (often pretty quickly, thanks to docker)
I think we’re broadly in agreement here, and I think both our statements are important to the Linux discussion. Moreover, we’re not speaking privately - I wish I could direct recent converts from Windows to this thread as a whole, as you offer good advice - be wary of your sources & learning how to inspect gifts you’re offered is excellent advice.
This is absolutely a shortcoming of Arch - but I don’t see it getting fixed soon. Your change is practical, and could reduce the attack surface for bad actors, but it also introduces gatekeeping and would slow down time from code change to deployment. The open community and blazing fast end-to-end turnaround are both Arch key features (in my opinion).
If you prefer more vetted code, there’s other great distros (Debian leaps to mind).
But honestly - yes, some people got hurt - but it was addressed in a day. That’s not a bad turnaround ~ I’ve certainly seen that damage wrought by Windows- and iOS-based malware run at least that long.
This can be seen as the system working as intended. Please don’t run Arch on mission critical systems. There’s other distros for that. While this vulnerability is Arch-specific, this OS is often a canary for others. But if you can tolerate being on the frontier, Arch is very well documented and is great for learning - and yes it has some risk.

People are complicated and FOSS isn’t as simple as all or nothing.
Sometimes people have things setup before they discovered FOSS - it’s hard for me to give up my gmail account from age 14, even though I run my own domain now.
Sometimes FOSS gets captured - Microsoft owns githib now, which makes tough decisions for all the projects hosted there.
They’re usually (usually) not the same individuals, but the evil ones deliberately use the “good” ones as a shield. They’re a happy to rally as Christians to any attack from outside the religion, but will write off abuses they see internally as “not my church”.
They all have Sunday brain. Living one life Sunday morning that’s just disconnected from their choices they make the rest of the week.
But, that’s indoctrination for you. The most infuriating part is when otherwise good & great people decide that calling themselves Christian, setting themselves up as human shields for all the abusive controlling monsters among their number. They’ll say the monster is ‘a sinner’ and ‘doesn’t represent our values’ while rushing to the defense of Christianity. They’d rather white-wash the Christian label than fix the structural abuse done by by ‘their neighbors’ (but it’s never their church that’s the problem).
Don’t forget people of any color but white having any kind of fun. That’s shameful, too!

The people making the rules know this. They just … in their Christian nationalist hearts believe porn shouldn’t exist. And since there’s too much precedent to simply make it illegal (they’ve tried before). So here they’re trying to make watching it as painful and degrading as humanly possible.

I should have remembered that. I had to lend my card out to my friend who was in a credit lock at the time they needed a rental. Still, I don’t think my advice is invalid, just irrelevant here.
Yes. I agree - on paper all three have a chargeback process that appear similar enough. However, assuming you aren’t a financial expert who never needs help, I’m discussing the behind the front politics at play and each group’s motivations to go above and beyond.
It’s about who’s lawyers you can rally to your defense in a dispute.
With a credit card you’re spending the bank’s money. If you can convince the bank you’re in the right, it’s you and the bank’s lawyers recovering the bank’s money.
As a debit card user, the banks will support your legal rights, because it’s good business for your clients to prosper. While the bank’s lawyers won’t go to bat for you, many will be willing to give you quasi-legal and quasi-financial tidbits or point you in the right direction.
As the bank’s client’s employee, you’re basically on your own. Good luck.
Too many people these days don’t use or have access to credit cards for services like this. Many people I know only use bank debit cards, or worse, use the debit preloaded cash cards issued by their employers’ payroll service provider.
Credit cards motivate banks to help you, because if you won’t pay, and the business doesn’t pay, the bank has to take the hit.
Debit cards will work as well if your bank values it’s reputation - but not all banks do.
And I would not trust a preloaded card provider to assist. You are neither their business partner nor their customer and that puts your interests at the bottom of a very long list. You have to hope some law is on your side or that your issue is so trivial that resolving it is more cost effective then dealing with you.
Personally, it has always struck me that half is wildly optimistic. Still, (frustratingly) it seems the case that some marketing is correlated with some success in business.
