I’m not from the US, but I believe the last time one of those entities meaningfully strayed from the line of the US government was 164 years ago. So, saying the US is basically a confederation with its members acting independently on the world stage is a bit of a stretch, don’t you think?

What anon did was combine those two things and basically write ∫ f(x) dx = dx ∫ f(x). Which is nonsensical, but given the above rules not easily disproven.

I’m just having a chuckle about the use of “Sun Tzu level” in the post, where it is used as a metaphor for being smarter than everyone else. While the book referenced is a dated beginner-level introduction to the subject of military strategy.

A little reminder that Sun Tzu “The Art of War” is not some grand masterpiece in strategic thinking. It is a guide aimed at nobelmen that were so far removed from reality, that they needed to be told things like “You can’t just order a win in a real competition” or “If you don’t give your soldiers food, they become weak and die”
The reason, why his literature created such a cultural ripple, is that telling them these absolute basic things, massively improved there performance on the battlefield. Not because it made them a grand strategic thinker, but because they no longer acted like spoiled toddlers throwing toys around.
Saying someone is a Sun Tzu-level strategic thinker, means they have an absolute basic grasp on reality and nothing really more.

You can’t always cook. Sometimes you have to sterilise water another way. E.g. via exposure to as much UV/Sunlight as possible. Particles in the water lessen the effect or prevent this from happening

Was mMn der Bundeswehr helfen würde ihr Image zu verbessern, wäre die Rückbesinnung auf auf die Kernaufgabe, die militärische Verteidigung Deutschlands und seiner direkten Bündnispartner. Die letzten Jahrzehnte haben gezeigt, dass die BW eben auch eingesetzt wird, um Machtprojektion zu betreiben, zum Teil auch stellvertretend für die USA.
Warum soll ich als junger Mensch eine Karriere einschlagen, in der die Gefahr besteht, dass ich irgendwann versuchen soll in einem weit entfernten Land einem dem Westen positiv eingestellten Staat aufzubauen? Wie ist es attraktiv mitzubekommen, dass gar kein Staatsidentifikation in diesem Land existiert und man nicht nur gegen religiöse Fanatiker, sondern auch fehlende Motivation bei den einheimischen Rekruten kämpfen muss? Wie ist es attraktiv dann plötzlich aus dieser Stellung unverrichteter Dinge abgezogen zu werden und mit ansehen zu müssen, wie langjährigen einheimischen Kollegen und Freunden das dringend benötigte Asyl in Deutschland verwehrt wird?
Die BW braucht Rückendeckung, ja das stimmt. Aber das muss die Rückendeckung aus der Politik sein, dass man als Soldaty nicht für ein paar Gefälligkeiten zwischen Polikerys verheizt wird, sondern Auslandseinsätze durchdacht sind und klar der Verteidigung Deutschlands dienen. Und vor allem, dass das die nächsten paar Jahre/Jahrzehnte auch so bleibt. Dieses Vertrauen wurde mMn stückweise verspielt. Beginnend irgendwo im Kosovokonflikt, über unsere beinahe Beteiligung am Irak-Krieg, bis hin zum oben beschrieben Verlauf in Afghanistan.

He did lose his trail, but wasn’t at the point where he wanted to call for help. It looks like he wasn’t aware that, if a lodge host at popular hiking spots asks about your plans for the day, it isn’t just small talk.
Iirc He wasn’t lost. Somebody told the authorities, that the guy was missing and that he wanted to go on a hike. So they called him to see if he really was lost. He didn’t answer the call, so they presumed he was injured or lost his phone. With this information they declared him lost and started a search.
Die Frage ist doch schon, was “stolz auf etwas sein” bedeutet. Stolz ist doch eigentlich ein Gefühl, dass die eigene Arbeit Früchte getragen hat. Das kann die Arbeit in einem Kunstprojekt sein, Erziehung die in Erfolg des Kindes mündet oder der Beistand der einem Freund aus einem Loch geholt hat.
“Ich bin Stolz auf dich” ist doch eigentlich ein Ausdruck, dass das eigene Gehirn gerade Dopamine ausschüttet für den eigenen Einsatz in der Vergangenheit. Ohne persönlichen Einsatz auch kein Stolz.
Aber ist Stolz überhaupt auf ein Konstrukt in der Größe einer Nation anwendbar? Ich mag Deutschland. Ich mag die Werte, die es sich auf die Fahne schreibt. Ich fühle eine Verbundenheit zu dem Konzept “Deutschland”. Aber kann ich stolz drauf sein? Kann ich holistisch gesehen so einen Unterschied machen, sodass ich stolz auf eine Nation verspüren kann?

Das Standbilder existieren, die einen etwas komischen Eindruck erzeugen ist doch gar nicht das Problem. Selbst das Video (obwohl recht eindeutig) ist nicht das Problem. Wenn 24/7 Kameras auf uns gerichtet wären, gäbe es diese Bilder auch von mir und dir.
Das Problem ist das Elmo schon länger Zeit und mit zunehmender Frequenz Sachen von sich gibt, die auf eine faschistische Weltanschauung hindeuten. Und das das Video genau zum Zeitpunkt der Machtübergabe an Faschisten bzw. theokratische Extremisten entstanden ist.
Das macht es von einer unglücklichen gewählten Geste unterstützt von einer unglücklichen Kameraeinstellungen zur einem klaren Statement, das offenbar bewusst so gewählt wurde.

Other than the medieval church, global academia has the fundamentals right, imho. The methods are flawed but the general goal is the right one.
The problem in the US is not a fundamental flaw in academia, but lack of political understanding that a state benefits from educated citizens and fundamental research that isn’t immediately monetisable. That resulted in this weird situation, where the most prestigious facilities are just sport centers with a side hustle in education.
In the future the methods of today’s global research will more likely be seen as something like greek philosophers. The goal of generating knowledge was right. The method of just writing down what your two remaining neurons, that haven’t drowned in wine yet, produced and never verifying it, was… let’s call it flawed from a modern perspective.

Vor meinem inneren Auge ist solches Verhalten das eines 12 Jährigen, der heulend zur Lehrkraft gerannt ist, weil ihn jemand doof genannt hat, im Nachgang allerdings so tut als sei es halb so wild und er auch nicht genau erklären kann warum jetzt eine Schulkonferenz zum Thema “Umgang miteinander” einberufen wurde.

In my country you have to inform your employee, when their vacation days are about to expire and make measurable efforts to find a vaccination schedule that works for both of you. Or else they don’t expire.
Or you know, you could talk to your employees and work out a schedule over the year, that works for both of you. If you, as a business, are unable to do basic management tasks, then yes you run into the situation, where you are functionally unable to do business at the end of the year.
