lolcatnip@reddthat.comto Politics@beehaw.org•Lawsuit Alleges 'Secretly Altered' Vote Machines Stole Election From Kamala HarrisEnglish10·2 months agoIt varies a lot by state. Washington primarily uses mail-in paper ballots. I love never having to visit a polling location. (In-person voting is an option here, but everyone I know votes by mail).
lolcatnip@reddthat.comto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What game changing item*s can you buy for $100 or less?English21·2 months agoMy EDC is a Spyderco Para 3, but IMHO Kershaw is a great budget brand. I really like the Iridium, but the finish is a bit too delicate for my taste because I keep my knife in the same pocket with my keys.
lolcatnip@reddthat.comto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What game changing item*s can you buy for $100 or less?English2·2 months agoThere are other kinds of monitors that come pretty close, but definitely not for under $100. For example, the Nebula display on some Asus laptops, or the Nixeus NX-EDG34S (which is no longer available, but I assume there are equally good monitors available using the same tech).

Birds, for instance, can have amazing vision with much smaller eyes.

lolcatnip@reddthat.comto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•An alien who sees in the radio part of the light spectrum would probably be blinded by all our wireless communicationsEnglish2·2 months agoYou’ve described the reasons why aliens that see in the radio spectrum would never evolve in the first place. Aliens from a particularly cool star might have their vision attuned to infrared, but no place that’s warm enough to have liquid water would be cold enough to make radio waves more useful than infrared.

I did for a very long time. And you also have to consider non-native speakers who might not know the nautical terms at all.
The trains where I live say “on my right” and “on my left”. It sounds a little weird hearing an automated voice speaking in the first person, but it’s concise and gets the message across to people who won’t know nautical terms.
It’s wild how you see criticism of Joe Rogan as a “meltdown”.
