Uniper welcomes the German government’s plans to build new gas-fired power plants
The company reiterated its intention to participate in the German government’s planned tender for new gas-fired power plants.
They’re reducing their aim, not the current production though.
Ah yes, uniper. The guys who almost went bankrupt with their gas trading business after putins war began.
To provide a broader picture to this headline:
Gas-fired generation accounts for 15-20% of European generation output, depending on weather conditions, while solar & wind makes up almost 30% of European supply, with a higher % contribution in many larger power markets.
In China, the gas sector lobbies heavily for the central government in Beijing to increase the number of power plants that run on gas to boost faltering demand. China’s gas demand has slowed due to weaker industrial activity, booming renewable-energy supply, and a continued reliance on coal, but analysts expect gas demand to increase in the near future if and when China’s economy finds its way back to growth.
The Chinese government has been working on increasing the share of natural gas in the energy mix due to its cleaner nature compared to coal, but there is still a significant gap between domestic production and demand, and China is still by far the world’s largest coal power. Just in June 2025, for example, The Chinese group CHN Energy has started the installation of China’s largest gas turbine in Eastern China.
I guess it is not hard to guess what role fossil fuels will play in the energy mix of Trump’s US.
