Also a convicted felon, and an insurrectionist unconstitutionally occupying the White House.

I’m sure his barely-passing BA in business from Penn would qualify him to second-guess Krugman, if Trump weren’t also dumb as a bag of hammers.

Roflmao, what was Krugman’s Nobel prize for? Oh yeah, international trade. I think he knows a bit about tariffs.

Call it what it is, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

Alfred Nobel made awards for 5 fields. Economics is not one of them. Economists invented their own prize with Nobel’s name somewhere in the title to try and trick people into thinking its a real science. The headline is wrong and should be corrected to read:

Trump Goes Nuclear on Riksbank Prize-Winning Economist Paul Krugman Over Tariffs Jab: ‘Deranged BUM’

Economics is absolutely a real science. That’s like saying sociology isn’t a real science.

Its a science but its actual experimental data (eg: real science) is a small fraction of the field and relatively new.

Also, much like other humanities sciences… There’s been the alarming discovery that much of what is taken for granted by earlier studies and applied at scale worldwide, is bunk - or at least very flawed. https://theconversation.com/the-replication-crisis-has-engulfed-economics-49202

So you can forgive people for being dismissive.

It’s political economy with the politics “removed.” As if you can just subtract the human, political impact of political economy and meaningfully “only” talk cold hard dollars.

Just because Trump doesn’t like the former chief economic advisor to Reagan, doesn’t mean he’s suddenly a great guy…

Sometimes (a lot of times) it’s just two assholes fighting and neither are a good person.

Martin Feldstein? He’s been dead since 2019. How did he get mixed up in this?

Krugman was a staffer on the Council of Economic Advisers during Reagan, yeah. He crunched numbers; he didn’t set policy. He also has a pretty solid 40 year track record of very much not being a Reaganite. He’s consistently called for higher marginal taxes, a stronger social safety net, universal healthcare, adequate funding for the sciences and education, and more.

He’s also an authority on this topic, since it was his work on international trade in particular that won him the Nobel Prize. Not really sure where the hostility is coming from.

Yeah, Krugman isn’t exactly a progressive radical, but of all the well known mainstream economists he is by far the most sane.
