Honestly every networking company that couldn’t be bothered to ship with randomized creds physically embedded/etched somewhere on the device should’ve probably went out of business. The cost has always been minimal and the increased security value has always been readily apparent.
Ptsf@lemmy.worldto Linux@programming.dev•Framework Desktop With AMD Ryzen AI Max Offers Excellent, Linux-Friendly Performance3·6 天前If I were to hazard a guess, they’re reusing a mobile board design for this somewhat and at least in mobile applications socketed dimms draw 30-50% more juice than soldered. It could also be the npu or gpu requiring the 5-10% extra memory bandwidth they get from being soldered. I do agree that I don’t think it was worth the trade offs from a consumer perspective, but framework seems to generally make good choices so I’m thinking there must’ve been some outside pressure at play affecting the financials of the project or something.

We’ve Had the Answer for Years | Science and firsthand experience both point to sentient sea lifeEnglish2·7 天前My reponse has always been “If that’s the case, why make it appear as though it’s suffering to us?” And they usually respond with some level of “it’s a test”. Personally I think it’s just a wild set of mental loopholes they engage with to justify not feeling any guilt or reverance for the creatures they are consuming but I genuinely don’t know.
Sure, but care or not they can both certainly influence development on your favorite IP. Having the knowledge to be able to exploit this exploitive practice is not the same as supporting it or agreeing with its existence, just simple acknowledgement of your ability to influence outcomes of which in this case I’d suggest picking the one that is forever in your own personal favor.

We’ve Had the Answer for Years | Science and firsthand experience both point to sentient sea lifeEnglish41·7 天前“God created all for us to enjoy. Why would he instill within it the sense of self with which to suffer?” Is a paraphrased response I’ve received when posing this question to a few friends.
That does unfortunately and irrefutably occur. It’s not every case, but it is sadly likely a majority.
There is a genuine downside, in that launch numbers are what most gaming publishers pay attention to most closely when deciding to greenlight expansions and sequels, but generally there are far more reasons to wait and know what you’re getting than to take the dive early and blind.
Imagine being the first alien civilization to find remnants of ancient human culture in space, and it’s a cancerous death rock screaming radiation… Haha
I feel that’s not fair to some of the engineers at SpaceX. A prior head of NASA is quoted multiple times saying reusable first stages would be impossible, only 5-10 years before SpaceX landed 2 falcon heavy first stages simultaneously. Space is hard. A lot of test and production space vehicles do explode. Several of the challenger missions for example. Clearly Elon is a rube, but that doesn’t imply everyone under him is… So maybe just try to make your point without disrespecting and disregarding the work of some of the brightest engineers on the planet?
And we can just shoot the spent fuel into the sun!
Ptsf@lemmy.worldto Privacy@programming.dev•The USPS just issued a warning to customers of new ‘brushing’ scam — urges Americans to start treating personal info ‘like cash.’ Here’s what you need to know now9·8 天前I once had a legitimate and expected call circa 2014 with the SSA to discuss depositing into my bank account of a dispursement. The call came from a random Tennessee number. The first question was “what’s your Social Security number?” And my response was “I don’t think I’m supposed to give anyone that” and the guy legitimately laughed and went “yeah, but you need to give it to us” and that’s the day I discovered our government’s opsec is 💩.
Ptsf@lemmy.worldto Linux@programming.dev•Linux is becoming more appealing for gamers – here's why4·8 天前I’d avoid mint if you have an nvidia card or newer hardware. They ship older more “stable” versions of systems packages and kernels that just make it a pain. You may try something with built in nvidia support like PopOs or Catchy.
Since you clearly plan on keeping this equipment for the long-term, you may be better served by a newer lower power option that will likely be more performant for less long term cost.

Ptsf@lemmy.worldto AI@lemmy.ml•The AI bubble is so big it's propping up the US economy (for now)32·9 天前Considering the cost, at least in a vacuum, is a few hours of my time setting up a local model to run on a gpu I already had (pretty pixels make me go “Ooooooo Aaaaaahhh”) vs 8+ hours of reading a manual for an appliance I’m going to configure once; I’d say it’s objectively a productive tool in it’s current capacity. If you mean to say productive for society I’ve no clue, and I think there’s far too many variables for any person to reasonably know.
Ptsf@lemmy.worldto AI@lemmy.ml•The AI bubble is so big it's propping up the US economy (for now)24·9 天前I think they have some objective use. It’s been a long while since I’ve had to front-to-back a device manual. Now I just dump it into the llm and use it as a easy natural language search indexer for the content with built in summary features.
Even in the future technology disappoints.
