My employer is pushing AI usage, if the work is done the work is done. This is the reality we’re supposed to be living in with AI, just conforming to the current predatory system because “AI bad” actively harms more than it helps.

A good chunk of the Internet usage is HD videos which is far more power hungry than AI. I agree it’s added on top…just like streaming did in 2010, and as things will continue to do.
Would love an explanation on how I’m in the wrong on reducing my work week from 40 hours to 15 using AI.
Existing in predatory capitalistic system and putting the blame on those who utilize available tools to reduce the predatory nature of our system is insane.
This echo chamber isn’t ready for this logical discussion yet unfortunately lol
This is valid to all data centers serving all websites. Your take is a criticism of unregulated capitalism, not AI.
Beef farming is a far far far more impactful discussion, yet here we are.
Im thinking of the fork the devs of the programming.dev instance were trying to build, it was PHP. Can’t remember the name, then this and Pixelfed. I don’t know if favoritism is the right word but I do feel like 3 projects is a lot for the current ecosystem lol.
Certainly an interesting decision.
What’s up with ActivityPub projects being beholden to PHP. Not even pitting languages against each other, just interesting that most new projects nowadays will choose something like Typescript + React but fediverse tends to favor PHP.
Sl00k@programming.devto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you do when homeless folks ask for money?English20·3 天前I wonder if the people saying they give money every time live in major cities (and walk often).
Honestly there’s panhandlers then there’s homeless. I get asked for money surprisingly few amounts of times from homeless and I usually throw them $5-10 every time if I have cash.
Frequent panhandlers I will never give money to. If you’re around the area a lot it’s pretty easy to know the difference.
This isn’t even taking into consideration eating red meat which has a far great impact than any AI query ever will, but most anti-AI peeps aren’t ready for that conversation.

Really need to include that if they have anything worth saying, otherwise it’s just a marketing article for their platform.

But right now we’re very unoptimized with land regrowth and there’s a huge difference that can be made with just properly handling the land and to stop ranching in literal deserts.

Job searching as a SWE who’s trying to get out of SAAS and into something sustainability or space really makes you realize how many of these companies there are.
They all operate under the guise of sustainability and eco friendly we’re making the world a better place, but their revenue is mostly from the Pentagon and or Israel and they also conveniently provide satellite images of every spot on the earth “on the side”
Then why are you guys avoiding a logical discussion around environmental impact instead of spouting misinformation?
The fact of the matter is eating a single steak or lb of ground beef will eclipse all most peoples AI usage. Obviously most can’t escape driving, but for those of us in cities biking will far eclipse your environmental impact than not using AI.
Serving AI models aren’t even as bad as watching Netflix, this counterculture to AI is largely misdirected anger that thrown towards unregulated capitalism. Unregulated data centers. Unregulated growth.
Training is bad but training is a small piece of the puzzle that happens infrequently, and again circles back to the unregulated problem.
